Travel Trends for 2020

Travel plans are reaching the final stretch as spring break starts. Has travel increased? Is it getting more expensive? Is the recent outbreak of the coronavirus deterring travelers?
Vacation season is upon us with summer following quickly after spring break. Should we expect business tourist destinations, airports, and gas stations? U.S. travel stated,"U.S. domestic travel increased 1.9 percent in 2018 to a total of 2.3 billion person-trips.1 Domestic leisure travel increased 2.0 percent in 2018 to 1.8 billion person-trips.2 Leisure travel accounted for 80 percent of all U.S. domestic travel in 2018. Domestic business travel increased 1.6 percent from 2017 to 464 million person-trips. International visitations to the U.S. (including overnight visits from Canada and Mexico) increased 3.5 percent and totaled 79.6 million in 2018." Traveling is becoming more popular as the years go on.
Travel trends are changing as people are looking for new ways to experience the most from their trips. Forbes found that there are for big travel trends that are expected for 2020.
1. Staying at a place that is environmentally friendly
2. Traveling off the beaten path
3. An interest in different transportation to reach destinations
4. Motion-Based travel-for example: using bikes and boats as transportation on vacation
Following these four trends will definitely change up the way you view your vacation. It can be fun to try something different; regardless of where you are going!
Mike Wright, a local frequent traveler, spoke with us about his impressive experiences. "I travel approximately 200,000 miles a year with about 40% of that (travel) being air travel." His favorite places to travel have been in Europe and Asia. Wright estimates that 80% of his travels are for business and 15% of his travel is for pleasure.

The cost of travel has increased steadily within the past few years and it is predicted to continue to climb in 2020 (Business Wire). They found that the average business trip costs approximately $1,293. The breakdown of the trips:
Airfare - 34%
Lodging - 28%
Meals - 19%
Ground Transportation - 18%
The recent outbreak of the coronavirus has impacted travel greatly. Especially international travel. The Washington Post reports that the U.S. has placed travel restrictions on Iran, Italy, and South Korea. The fear surrounding this virus has affected travel, even inside the United States, because people are concerned that their tourist destinations may leave them sick. Others are willing to take a chance so they can enjoy their spring break plans.
